The West Is Still Wild

Wyoming has to be the only state which truly epitomizes the essence of the Wild West. Being in Wyoming is like being on the movie set of an old western. Mountains and canyons, valleys and prairies, sage-covered hills and tree-lined rivers, ranches and small towns, cows and horses portray a lifestyle more common 150 years ago.

In spite of modern conveniences such as cars and paved roads, Wyoming is able to maintain the spirit and atmosphere of the Wild West in its quaint towns and in its friendly, down-to-earth inhabitants.

This old mine entrance in the center of town looks like a location for the hanging of horse thieves. I wonder when it was last used.

Speaking of horses, in Wyoming these animals are esteemed citizens with an honored place in history.

Sugar, a horse who lives on a small ranch outside of Dubois, Wyoming commented, “I was born and raised in Wyoming, and I wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else. Here a horse can work, graze and play within an incredible expanse of breath-taking scenery.” She also related that the hoofed animals of Wyoming, such as horses, cows, sheep, elk and moose, outnumber the people.

With a human population of only around 500,000 people in a state the size of Great Britain, there is plenty of room to stretch your legs without coming in contact with another person for days at a time.

At our campground we have deer, chipmunks, ground squirrels and prairie dogs, all of which naturally spur my hunting instincts.

I have never been to Wyoming and always wondered about it. I love that the population is so low and the land is so expansive, and mainly that the animals are revered and cared for. It’s funny that I’m exploring the desert in Arizona while you’re exploring the mountains of Wyoming. I’d prefer to be with you. It is 108 degrees today and was 102 last night at 7pm. How do people live out here?

  2. The weather here is lovely … 60° – 80°. However, we are headed south where is will become hotter as we go.
